- Why smart buildings? In the U.S., buildings account for 39% of total energy use and 71% of electricity consumed. They are responsible for 39% of total CO2 emissions, and 12% of potable water consumed. Strategic trends, including the cost of energy, the mandate to respond to climate change, as well as compliance with Congressional and Federal mandates compel GSA to identify solutions not only during the design phase, but also at the building operation level. Solutions affecting building operations need to be retrofit-friendly, and establish enhanced partnerships between facility management, IT staff, and occupants. - Arch Rock Wireless Data Center Solution
- Recent trends toward dense blade computing, server virtualization and load balancing contribute to increased rack power densities and introduce dynamic hot spots in the data center. With data center operators spending approximately 50% of their operational budget on cooling, gaining increased and finer grain visibility into rack-level thermal gradients, humidity levels, computer room air handling units (CRAHs), and under floor tile air flow is critical to failure prevention and energy savings. Gartner Research estimates that data centers typically waste more than 60% of the energy they use to cool.1 Increasingly, enterprise and data center managers want better visibility into thermal profiles and power management and require a solution that is easy to integrate and manage within their existing IT infrastructure. - Energy Efficient Ethernet - via IEEE
- From TechSpot.com: Description of research being conduct by various IEEE affiliated individuals and organizations. The idea is to save power in PCs and laptops (most of which ship with GigE cards now) when LAN links are idle, or not utilizing full bandwidth. Researchers estimate that U.S. companies could collectively save $450 million a year in power costs by using such a technology. Rather than doing a single link-detection and speed-detection upon an interface become active, the proposal would see devices that do real-time checks, allowing a link that is being used very little to throttle down to 10mbps, for instance when just casually surfing, but then increase up to 1Gbps when streaming a video from a media machine in the other room. - RE: GUCI - Global Unified Communication ID The Generational Divide: World of Work Survey Encourages Collaboration By Eileen Mullan - November 2008 Issue, Posted Oct 20, 2008 Print Version Page 1 of 1 From recent college graduates to veteran employees, there are four generations in the work force today: Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Gen X-ers, and Millenials. With each of these groups comes a different opinion on how to best get the job done. More often than not, these different views on productivity collide and affect more than just the process—they affect the results. As technology advances, it is difficult to reach all four groups effectively, but it is essential for productivity to reconcile generational differences and get every employee, regardless of his or her generation, on the same page. - About NComputing - Today's PCs are so powerful that the vast majority of applications only use a small fraction of the computer's capacity. NComputing's virtualization software and hardware tap this unused capacity so that it can be simultaneously shared by multiple users. Each user's monitor, keyboard, and mouse connect to the shared PC through a small and very durable NComputing access device. The access device itself has no CPU, memory, or moving parts—so it is rugged, durable, and easy to deploy and maintain. The result is the lowest possible cost for computing access. - IPv6 Transition - Failure Options Presentation by Geoff Huston and Patrik Fältström
- Attached is one of the most compelling arguments for v6 I have ever seen. Its power derives from its authors: Geoff Huston is one of the pioneers of the Internet, responsible in large part for the Internet's early appearance in Australia; Geoff has been charting the progress of v4 address space exhaustion for many years and is recognized Internet-wide for this work. Patrik Fältström is a Consulting Engineer at Cisco who works in the rarefied atmosphere of the Internet's basic plumbing; Patrik is based in Sweden, where he is a frequently-consulted and trusted adviser to the Swedish government. The tension in this set of slides builds exponentially and convincingly (to me at least); it: * demonstrates that v6 is the only viable choice for the future, and * reveals why there are powerful commercial interests arrayed against it. The presentation was the keynote at a conference in Stockholm - that accounts for the Swedish text. GREEN PROTOCOL WG SOURCE: Stephen Wolff, Cisco

- ITU-T Technology Watch Briefing Reports covers next generation networks (NGN) and energy efficiency.
- The seventh in a series of ITU-T Technology Watch Briefing Reports covers next generation networks (NGN) and energy efficiency. The report examines the relationship between climate change and NGN by analyzing energy efficiency and applications. NGNs are seen by many as the new network architecture that will unify today’s fixed, mobile and broadcast networks. This innovative technology is expected to bring about greater energy efficiency than legacy networks by, for example, reducing the number of switching centres and increased temperature tolerance within those centres. NGNs are expected by some commentators to reduce energy consumption by 40 per cent compared to today’s public switched telephone network (PSTN). This report presents an overview of the main characteristics of NGN and looks at how NGN can minimize the power consumption of the network, transmission and end-user equipment and in data centres. It examines the energy savings that can be indirectly obtained from greater NGN usage, such as remote collaboration and ITU-T standardization work on NGN and climate change. The state, however, lacks the ability to harness data from its programs in a way that allows it to measure how effectively it uses its resources. The Commission found that a strategy of data-driven decision-making requires a new way of deploying information technology. Despite the recent promotion of the state chief information officer to the governor’s cabinet, the Commission found that California’s technology governance structure remains outdated – developed in reaction to a fear of failure and past scandals, with oversight dispersed across the executive branch. To build confidence and accountability, the Commission recommends that California further empower a technology leader to oversee the on-going multibilliondollar upgrade of the state’s legacy systems. - Comments on IPv6 Transition from India
- Is India ready for IPv6? Friday, 05 December , 2008, 17:45 Last Updated: Friday, 05 December , 2008, 17:56 Chennai: “If I look at the technological aspect, the request to most of us, most of our team, would be to have a mechanism and standardisation for co-existence of both protocols to avoid unacceptable service interruptions and any plausible damage to critical distributed applications. Many of which have were not well designed to benefit from the new functionalities enabled by IPv6,” says Tulika Pandey, Additional Director of the Department of Information Technology. What is not globally acceptable, as I understand, is a large-scale deployment of the new IP architecture, to provide any disruptive services or applications or innovations. But what is generally acceptable to us is a gradual interoperability and co-existence between IPv4 and IPv6, he says. Internet is a great asset: Ramalinga Raju If I take the case of the service providers or the network handlers, what they would prefer, they would prefer to preserve the heavy investments that they have made to run and deploy the IPv4 networks, Pandey adds. Service/network providers’ plea would be to grant them more time to move to IPv6. GREEN PROTOCOL WG SOURCE: Geof Lambert, WorldBridge Partners, IPv6 Forum

- Interesting Perspectives on Green Everywhere in USA
- The more cynical observers of the current scene might note that this hardly seems a new or novel observation. Attaching "green" to anything, no matter how tenuous the connection, is so established a fad as to be almost clichd and tiresome. Too true. But you ain't seen nuthin' yet. The prevailing sentiment combined with the new administration and Congress will only accelerate and intensify the push for all things green, at a pace and size to make the defense and highway appropriation bills positively Scrooge-like in their generosity by comparison. - Luxembourg IPv6 Deployment Road Map
- Document for the next i2010 preparatory meeting taking place on 28 January from 9.30 to 17.00 Room Walter Hallstein, Berlaymont Building Rond Point Schuman, 1040 Brussels Updated agenda: <<080120 draft agenda i2010 prep meeting 28 Jan 2009.doc>> We have made two changes: * We propose to add IPv6 to the agenda. IPv6 deployment in Europe is not fast enough, and this is an issue that impacts on our long-term competitiveness. We therefore think that the i2010 High Level Group could give IPv6 the necessary political impetus to advance the transition. At the meeting, we will briefly present the issue and discuss how the i2010 High Level Group could tackle it. It would also be helpful to understand how IPv6 is handled at the national level. * Under AOB, we have added the discussion of a draft mandate for renewing the i2010 sub-group on e-Inclusion. The i2010 High Level Group agreed at its last meeting on 18 November to renew this sub-group to ensure the follow-up to the e-Inclusion Ministerial Conference of Vienna and the e-Inclusion input to the post-i2010 strategy. A draft mandate is attached. We would like to have your feedback on this draft at the meeting and/or in writing. The aim is to make the sub-group operational as quickly as possible, i.e. to have the i2010 High Level Group approve the mandate at the meeting on 24 February.
